Allow Us to Reintroduce Ourselves

The Public Environmental Data Partners (PEDP), who run this website, have a new look thanks to a collaboration with Louis Charron, a New York based designer who specializes in science and research communications. The identity was designed to convey the mission and goals of the coalition which are to preserve, archive, and develop our country’s environmental and climate digital infrastructure. PEDP is a coalition of various non-profits, academic institutions, and members who volunteer their time. We came together in late 2024 as a response to the threats to our digital infrastructure from the current administration. With this new identity, PEPD is looking to position itself as an essential leader in maintaining open, accessible, and actionable environmental data for all communities.

New PEDP logo

In this important role as digital archivists and stewards, having a unique PEDP seal can help to represent authenticity and custodianship over the data and tools in our care. It can serve as a symbol of trust and accountability, assuring people that our records are authentic and have been properly managed. It can represent our shared commitment to these goals. For our mark in particular, the lines that represent our letters bring to mind both the flow of data moving through digital networks and the familiar image of stacked papers in traditional archives.

This is further reinforced through the color palette and other visual elements that make up the identity. The chosen typefaces (Figtree and Source Serif 4) are both open source, reflecting our commitment to accessibility and free access to data and information. The colors draw inspiration from different types of paper, representing the physical materials of an archive; our blue and green accent colors reflect our commitment to the environment, technology, and data.

The whole visual system is designed to resemble the desk of our PEDP archivists; our documents, databases, maps, and tools are all carefully organized and preserved for our shared futures. It strives to make the abstract digital assets into something more tangible, necessary, and real.

Looking ahead, PEDP’s new identity is about more than how we look. It will help us to define and redefine how we work, how we support our members, and how we continue to enable better understanding of our environments and risks posed by a rapidly changing climate.
